What Is a Medium? Can Anyone Become a Medium?
Updated: Aug 28

Many people are curious about mediumship, particularly if they have never experienced a reading before. One of the questions I am asked most often is, "What is a medium?" closely followed by, "Can anyone become a medium?" These are excellent questions because there is often confusion between mediumship, psychic ability, and intuition. Understanding the difference can help you make informed decisions if you are considering a reading or are simply interested in learning more about the spiritual world.
What Is a Medium?
A medium is someone who acts as a bridge between the physical world and the spirit world, communicating with loved ones who have passed away and bringing forward evidence, messages, and reassurance for those still living. The purpose of mediumship is not simply to provide comfort, but to demonstrate that the connection we share with those we love continues beyond physical life.
Mediumship is often confused with psychic work, although the two are quite different. A psychic generally works with the energy of a living person, offering guidance about their present circumstances, relationships, career, or future possibilities. A medium, on the other hand, communicates with those in spirit. While many professional mediums also possess psychic abilities, the focus of a mediumship reading is the communication with loved ones who have passed rather than reading the energy of the client.

What Is Evidential Mediumship?
Throughout my career, I have always believed that good mediumship should be evidential. Simply saying, "Your mum is here and she loves you," may sound comforting, but it does not provide any real evidence of who is communicating. The purpose of evidential mediumship is to provide information that enables the recipient to recognise their loved one through details that could not reasonably be guessed or researched.
Evidence may include personality traits, shared memories, favourite hobbies, occupations, family connections, nicknames, distinctive habits, or significant events that were meaningful to your relationship. These details often become the most emotional part of a reading because they remind people that their loved one remains the same person they knew and loved, with the same personality, humour, interests, and love for their family.
Why Evidence Matters
One of the principles that has guided my work for more than 35 years is the importance of allowing the evidence to speak for itself. During a reading, I am always looking for information that helps my client recognise who is communicating. Spirit may remind you of a treasured holiday, a favourite song, a private family joke, or a meaningful life event that only you would understand. Sometimes they acknowledge things happening in your life today, demonstrating that they continue to watch over and support those they love.
For many people, it is these deeply personal details that provide the greatest comfort. They remind us that although the physical body may no longer be here, love, personality, and connection continue. This is what makes evidential mediumship so meaningful for many clients who are seeking reassurance after the loss of a loved one.
Can Anyone Become a Medium?
This is one of the most common questions I receive, and the answer is not entirely straightforward. In my experience, most people possess some degree of natural intuition, and many can develop a greater awareness of the spirit world through study, practice, and dedication. However, mediumship involves far more than simply sensing energy or feeling that someone is present.
Developing as a medium requires patience, commitment, and continuous learning. A medium must learn how to recognise spirit communication, establish a clear connection with the spirit world, interpret information accurately, deliver evidence responsibly, and work with integrity and compassion. Like learning any professional skill, mediumship develops over time, and even after more than three decades of working professionally, I continue to learn and develop my own understanding.

What Happens During a Mediumship Reading?
Every mediumship reading is unique because every spirit communicator is unique. My role is to establish who is communicating by providing evidence before sharing any messages they wish to bring forward. These messages often contain reassurance, encouragement, guidance, healing, and reminders that our loved ones continue to be aware of the important moments in our lives.
Many people tell me that one of the most comforting aspects of a reading is recognising the personality of their loved one. Whether they were humorous, caring, practical, or quietly supportive during their lifetime, those qualities often continue to shine through during a reading, making the experience deeply personal and meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between a psychic and a medium?
A psychic works with the energy of living people, offering guidance about current situations, relationships, career, or future possibilities. A medium communicates with loved ones who have passed away, providing evidential messages and reassurance from the spirit world. While many professional mediums also have psychic abilities, the focus of a mediumship reading is communication with spirit rather than reading the client's energy.
2. Can anyone become a medium?
Many people have natural intuition and can develop a greater awareness of the spirit world through study, practice, and experience. However, becoming a skilled medium requires dedication, ethical practice, and ongoing development. Like any profession, mediumship is a lifelong journey that involves learning how to interpret and communicate information accurately and responsibly.
3. What happens during a mediumship reading?
During a mediumship reading, the medium aims to establish a connection with loved ones in spirit and provide evidence that helps identify who is communicating. Messages often include personal memories, personality traits, reassurance, guidance, and information that brings comfort and healing. Every reading is unique, and the information received will vary from person to person.
4. How do I know if a medium is genuine?
A genuine medium will work with honesty, compassion, and professionalism. They should provide evidential information rather than vague statements, respect client confidentiality, and never use fear or pressure to encourage additional services. Researching reviews, experience, and qualifications can also help you choose a reputable practitioner.
5. Can a medium guarantee contact with a specific loved one?
No. Every connection with the spirit world is unique, and no ethical medium can guarantee that a particular loved one will communicate during a reading. Professional mediums work with the spirit communicators who come forward, and the focus is always on providing meaningful evidence and messages with integrity and compassion.
